The Food Bank Farm of western MA is a non-profit organization that maintains a CSA that sells regular shares to be self-supporting and they donate half the crop to food banks. Such a farm could be started by developing a business plan and applying for start-up capital from grants. As a non-profit they draw volunteers and donations to help with the labor. I am sure they also have full time staff. The most daunting start-up cost would be the cost of the land.

Hello. Thanks for reading my pantry proposal. Here's my update. I had talked to someone at MidOhio Food Bank and several people at OEFFA to no avail. Just don't have the authority or funding to move up the ladder to make it happen. My next step would be to form a group or find a non=profit to take this trip. I recommend that people study The Food Bank Farm in the Boston area for inspiration. The GreenHouse project being suggested at my infoshop meetings would tie in nicely with this also. So please. Call. Write. Thanks Karen

That is a great idea. Please let us know how her project went and any tips she would have for those reproducing the project. We will add this to the list of potential projects. Thanks Julie.

Have you ever thought about organizing a local neighborhood fruit picking team. All volunteers, harvesting neighborhood fruit trees that generally don't get harvested. It's a bonus for the homeowner to not have to pick up all the dropped fruit, maybe give them some off their own tree, and donate the rest to the food pantry. My daughter is getting ready to try this out on some neighborhood homes here as part of a service project for school. I thought I'd pass along the great idea. :)
